Non Multa, Sed Multum

Jacinta Marto and Lúcia de Jesus Rosa dos Santos

NON MULTA, SED MULTUM

“Non multa, sed multum.”

Translation: Not many, but much.

The Latin saying is a paraphrase of Quintilian:

“Optimis adsuescendum est et multa magis quam multorum lectione formanda mens et ducendus color.”

“It is the best writers to whom we must become accustomed; we should form our minds and take our tone from extensive reading, rather than from reading many authors.”

In Quintilian, Institutio Oratoria: The Orator's Education, Book 10.1, 59, edited and translated by Donald A. Russell (Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press, 2001), pages 282-83

Non multa, sed multum, that is, not quantity, but quality—it’s an adage that may be applied to life, meaning, neither a long nor a short life, but a life of quality, however long it might be.

Photo dated 1917 is of two Fatima visionaries, Saint Jacinta Marto (1910-1920) and Sister Lúcia de Jesus Rosa dos Santos (1907-2005)—Saint Jacinta died at only nine years old, Sister Lúcia at ninety-seven. Sister Lúcia was granted the title of Servant of God on February 13, 2017, the first major step towards her canonization.

Youthful saints in particular remind us that it is quality of life that matters, not quantity, holiness of life that counts, not length of life. Non multa, sed multum.

  2. PRAYER FOR THE INTERCESSION OF LÚCIA DE JESUS ROSA DOS SANTOS, OCD

Lúcia de Jesus Rosa dos Santos, OCD, (March 28, 1907 – February 13, 2005), also known as Lúcia of Fátima and by her religious name Sister Maria Lúcia of Jesus and of the Immaculate Heart, was a Portuguese Carmelite nun and one of the three children, including her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto who witnessed the Marian apparitions in Fatima in 1917.

Here is a prayer we have for her intercession.

Most Holy Trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, whom we profoundly adore, we thank You for the appearances of the Most Holy Virgin in Fatima which manifested the riches of her Immaculate Heart.

For the infinite merits of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we beg You that for Your greater glory and the good of our souls, You make worthy of glorification before the Holy Church, Sister Lucia, the shepherdess of Fatima. Through her intercession, this grace we ask of You. Amen.
